1. Who Needs It and When to Apply

Who: All foreigners (including exchange students) staying in Korea for more than 90 days are required to apply for an ARC.

Deadline: You must apply within 90 days of entry into Korea. Failure to do so can result in fines, visa cancellation, or deportation.
2. Application Process
Step 1: Book an Appointment

Make an appointment online through the HiKorea website for the nearest Immigration Office.
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

Passport and photocopy

Student visa (D-2)

Certificate of Enrollment from your university in Korea

Completed application form (available on HiKorea or at the immigration office)

Photo: 3.5 Γ 4.5 cm, taken within the last 6 months, light background

Proof of Residence: Dormitory confirmation letter, rental contract, or accommodation booking confirmation

Fee: Around KRW 30,000 (cash)
Step 3: Immigration Office Visit

Submit documents, provide fingerprints, and have your information registered.
Step 4: Wait for Issuance

Processing takes about 4β6 weeks. You will either pick it up at the office or receive it via post.
3. After Receiving Your ARC
ARC Functions

Serves as your official ID in Korea.
β’
Required for opening a bank account, mobile phone contracts, health insurance, hospital visits, online verifications, etc.
Reporting Changes

If you change your address, name, passport details, or other key information, you must report it to the immigration office within 14 days.
Loss or Reissuance

If lost, apply for reissuance within 14 days (fee: KRW 30,000).
Extension & Re-entry

To extend your stay, apply for an extension at HiKorea or the immigration office with your ARC, passport, and university documents (fee: KRW 60,000).

If leaving and returning before your visa expires, you may need to apply for re-entry permission via HiKorea.
4. Example from Korean Universities

Korea University: Strongly recommends applying for an ARC as soon as possible after arrival, as you cannot proceed with academic registration without it.

Seoul National University: Once you receive your ARC, you can apply for the S-Card (student ID + ATM card). Itβs also required for opening a bank account.
